The 1950s & 1960s were a time of inspiration and decadence. It was the celebration of style, hope, and unique jewelry. And personally, I cannot wait to inspire you to transform your wardrobe with these gorgeous pieces!

One of the things our clients and followers tell us is that they love vintage jewelry because it reminds them of a time when people got dressed up. It reminds them of special people and special times. No matter what, people got dressed up to go to the grocery store, the movie theater...everywhere!

The fashion of the 1950s and 1960s was a celebration of life and style, and it trickled down into jewelry and accessories. Decadence was for everyone!

A fashion shift transpired during the early 50s, and the economy returned to normal after World War II. Items once rationed saw a reprieve, and somber moods were replaced not with an escape from reality, but more of a realization that life was to be lived and enjoyeda sentiment that many of us can appreciate now more than ever due to the coronavirus epidemic. This sentiment became a way of life, and it influenced art, culture, music, and fashion.

Haute Couture reemerged, but this time it was special, it was different!

Famous designers like Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, and Hubert de Givenchy created lines for women that celebrated their femininity while also inspiring women to use fashion as an expression of style and decadence. The amazing thing is these designers whom we love so much and associate with timeless elegance were also resourceful, too.

They used less fabric so they weren’t wasteful and introduced costume jewelry and accessories as a way for women to set themselves apart from the rest. They also openly spoke of attainable and functional pieces women could invest in to make them feel chic while enjoying life, no matter where they were going, from the grocery store to “going to the pictures.”

It also influenced designers and department stores (who now catered to a variety of customers) to provide a wider variety of goods, styles and price points. This shift made designs and styles more accessible to women all over the world (not just those in Paris, London, New York, or Milan).

The 50s and 60s were also a time of growth and expansion. Synthetic and easy-care materials were created allowing women to invest in pieces that, at one time, were only reserved for the upper class. Designers like Christian Dior worked with companies like Swarovski to create the magical iridescent rhinestone we now know as “aurora borealis.”

This included fabulous jewelry and accessories with an opulent look fashioned with rhinestones, faux pearls, and sparkling crystals.

We were also introduced to inspiring stars: Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Sophia Lauren, just to name a few. These women became fashion icons, and everyday women began to copy their looks in their daily lives. With the introduction of attainable fashion and styles in mainstream department stores, the suburban housewife could now elevate her look and feel as glamorous as the stars!

Hubert de Givenchy gave his philosophy in 1952, “All a woman needs to be chic are a raincoat, two suits, a pair of trousers and a cashmere sweater.”

Add a little jewelry, and we couldn’t agree more.

With what you already have hanging in your closet, this week’s collection is here to remind you that the world is your runway whenever and wherever you go!

Xoxo,
Veronica
